In 2017, data from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission revealed that almost 13,000 emergency and eye care clinic admission cases were related to fireworks. Of this number, 36% were injuries to the eyes, ears and face. What’s more telling is that a majority of these cases occurred between the months of June and July. This obvious pattern is a result of the spike in activities involving fireworks during this season, particularly around the Fourth of July celebrations.

Avoiding Eye Injuries From Fireworks This Fourth of July

Here are a few tips to keep in mind while enjoying the fireworks this summer:

Big Fireworks vs. Small Fireworks

Big or small, fireworks are all incendiary devices and must always be handled with care. Big firework displays are actually less risky compared to sparklers. In fact, these small handheld “toys” are the number one cause of eye injuries requiring an eye specialist in small children. Never let a child younger than 12 use or play with sparklers. Older children should always have adult supervision when playing with sparklers and must always hold the device at arm’s length. Avoid running or holding more than one sparkler at the same time.

Firework Safety

Don’t attempt to handle bigger pyrotechnical devices yourself. It’s best to leave this to trained technicians and professionals. Mind the barriers they set up around their work area and stay at least 500 feet away from where the fireworks are being launched. Should you come across an unexploded device, call the police or the fire department right away. Do not pick it up or allow anyone else to pick it up.
