Scleral Lenses for Superior Vision Correction
Not all contact lenses are the same. While most cover the cornea of the eye – the small round center section – some contact lenses are larger. Much larger. These are known as “scleral lenses” because they rest on the eye’s sclera, or white part. At Park Slope Eye, many of our patients have seen dramatic results in vision correction, comfort and convenience thanks to scleral lenses.
Scleral lenses are one of the earliest versions of contact lenses, and were developed more than 50 years ago. Scleral lenses are oversized contact lenses, and are fitted to cover the entire eye, not just the center cornea. This results in superior vision correction, and virtually eliminates the problems of getting grit or dirt behind the lens, or the lens falling out.
As an added bonus, scleral lenses are generally much more comfortable to wear, as they rest on the “white of the eye” instead of the sensitive cornea. Advances in lens material technology have led to gas permeable lenses, which make scleral lenses even more comfortable and effective. They can be particularly effective for patients who suffer from dry eye caused by “regular” size contact lenses.
Because of their large size, scleral lenses demand a high degree of expertise for proper fitting. Dr. Justin Bazan and his staff at Park Slope Eye have extensive experience in prescribing and fitting scleral lenses, and in helping patients understand the proper care and insertion of their new lenses. We’re ready to help you explore the benefits of scleral lenses for superior vision correction.
