How Often Should I Have an Eye Exam?

A reliable preventive eye care plan is not complete without regular comprehensive eye exams. They are key tools to maintaining your visual health for a long time. They help in the immediate identification of underlying eye conditions, creating opportunities for your expert eye doctor to render early treatment. This way, we’ll be able to preserve your eyesight for a long time. Let Park Slope Eye share our recommended eye exam frequency.

 Eye Exam

For Children

Since children’s eyes are still developing, they may need special care when it comes to maintaining their visual health. This is why it’s important for them to undergo a comprehensive eye exam as early as six months of age. For older children, we recommend they have an exam when they are three years old.

Kids must also have an eye exam before they enter grade school. This way, we’ll be able to assess if they need to use any optical devices or undergo vision therapy to ensure their continuous learning. They should visit their go-to optometrist every two years until they turn 18 years old as well.

For Adults

Individuals between 18 and 60 years of age and are risk-free of developing vision conditions are advised to have comprehensive eye exams at least once every other year. Otherwise, we recommend they undergo one yearly exam or as advised by your eye specialist. For adults 61 years of age and above, we suggest they have their eyes examined annually since increasing age is a major risk factor for most eye conditions.

The American Optometric Association established a recommended eye exam schedule to serve as a guide. That said, your current eye health, personal history and other related factors must still be considered when it comes to setting your eye exam frequency. If a 10 year old is already wearing contact lenses, for example, it may be best to visit your optometrist yearly instead of every other year. As a rule, it’s still up to your trusted eye specialist how often you should actually have your eyes assessed.
