During physical exercise, you train your muscles to become stronger. Vision therapy applies the same principle. Today, Park Slope Eye provides insight into the fundamentals of vision therapy and how it is different from simply prescribing corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Achieving Better Vision Through Therapy

The Basics of Vision Therapy

Vision therapy, also known as vision training (VT), is a non-surgical program consisting of activities aimed at vision correction or improvement. VT sessions should always be conducted and supervised by an eye doctor. Kids and adults alike can benefit from this therapy. The customized programs include, but are not limited to, the use of therapeutic lenses, prisms, eye patches and balance boards. Note that VT is essentially a form of neurological rehabilitation where the brain is trained to coordinate more efficiently with the eyes.

Vision Problems Addressed by Vision Therapy

VT can correct a wide array of conditions, including:

  • Amblyopia: Amblyopic patients are prime candidates for VT. Amblyopia or “lazy eye” is most common among children. Symptoms include squinting, difficulty reading and constant headaches. If your child is exhibiting any of these symptoms, it’s best to consult a trusted pediatric eye doctor for proper diagnosis.

  • Strabismus: This vision disorder affects the alignment of the eyes. VT can help by training both eyes to function at the same performance level.

  • Phorias: This is a type of subtle ocular misalignment that causes eye strain and eye fatigue, especially when reading. Vision therapy can reduce or minimize these phorias-related vision troubles.

  • Head Trauma: Patients recovering from head trauma can also benefit from vision therapy.

There’s a substantial amount of research that shows vision therapy is effective. However, the effectiveness of VT depends on the collaborative effort between the doctor and patient. At Park Slope Eye, we provide personalized vision therapy programs that work. We also offer other services like dry eye treatment and laser surgery. You may reach us at (347) 380-7070. We serve Brooklyn, NY.
