4 Eye Safety Tips to Implement in Your Home Hero

4 Eye Safety Tips to Implement in Your Home

Did you know that 90% of eye injuries that people sustain in the home or at work are entirely preventable? In today’s post, Park Slope Eye, your family eye care specialist, shares four ways to prevent eye accidents at home.

1. Keep Your Living Space Well Lit

Having a well-lit home reduces risk of falls, which can cause injury to your eyes as well as other parts of your body. We also suggest securing rugs in your rooms and installing handrails where necessary. In addition, arrange your furniture so that it doesn’t obstruct any pathways in your home.

2. Be Careful When Doing Handy Work in the Yard or Home

The American Society of Ocular Trauma and the American Academy of Ophthalmology found that most household-related eye accidents involve garage, yard, or garden work. Using cleaning solvents, drilling screws, and hammering nails into walls are some common causes of injury. Your reliable eye care specialist also suggests taking care when cooking, using power tools, or even simply opening a champagne bottle.

3. Keep Tools in Good Condition and Out of Children’s Reach

Malfunctioning tools are another common cause of eye accidents at home. Inspect your tools carefully before using them—especially power tools. You should also avoid rushing hazardous tasks. After finishing a project, put your tools in a safe place out of children’s reach.

4. Wear Safety Eyewear

When Necessary Many eye accidents could have been avoided by wearing safety goggles. This rule also applies when doing household chores that involve chemicals. Your trusted eye doctor recommends using goggles made of polycarbonate material and certified by the American National Standards Institute.

If you sustain an eye injury at home, do not touch, rub, or put any pressure on the affected area. Avoid self-medicating or removing stuck debris as well. The best thing you can do is to head to your reputable eye clinic. For more effective home eye safety tips, complete our form to schedule an appointment. We serve Brooklyn, NY.
