4 Easy Steps to Effectively Cleaning Your Contact Lenses Hero

4 Easy Steps to Effectively Cleaning Your Contact Lenses

Book Appointment

Contact lenses provide both visual clarity and comfort as well as a feeling of normalcy. Despite the many benefits they offer, some are still skeptical about using them. A usual concern is that they may be complicated to maintain and care for. To help you, Park Slope Eye shares an easy four-step guide to cleaning your contact lenses.

 Contact Lenses

Step #1: Wash Your Hands Thoroughly

We suggest using antimicrobial or mild, cleansing soaps when washing your hands. Afterward, rinse your hands completely, removing all soap suds and grime. Then, dry your hands with a microfiber or lint-free towel. This step can greatly reduce hand-eye transmission of bacteria, which may cause eye infections.

Step #2: Follow the Prescribed Cleaning Instructions

Some contact lenses have specific care requirements, which is why it’s best to follow the cleaning instructions given by your reliable eye doctor or the lenses’ manufacturer. Generally, you should clean one lens at a time. Place it on your palm or in between your fingers with the side that touches your eye facing upward.

Afterward, apply a few drops of our recommended lens solution. Avoid using other solvents as they may contain substances that are incompatible with your lens material. Gently rub the lens in a circular motion to remove surface deposits and other foreign material. Lastly, rinse it off with freshly poured lens solution. Repeat the process for the other lens.

Step #3: Keep Your Contact Lenses in Their Respective Cases

Whenever you’re not using your contact lenses, keep them in their respective cases to keep them in good shape until they are due for replacement. We also advise cleaning your lens case regularly to prevent bacterial or mildew growth. Make sure to replace it at least once every three months as well.

Step #4: Remember Your Contact Lens Replacement Schedule

Contact lenses are designed with specific wearing frequencies, which helps reduce your chances of developing lens wear-related infections and complications. Before doing so, your eye specialist may perform an eye exam first to check if you need any prescription changes or upgrades
