Understanding How Vision Therapy Works

Book Appointment

Contact lenses and eyeglasses may not be effective at correcting certain types of vision problems. Fortunately, Park Slope Eye offers vision therapy as one of our corrective eyesight options. Here, we explain how this option works:

Preparing for Vision Therapy

We will begin by performing a comprehensive eye exam to assess your current visual health. This will help us determine if vision training is a viable option for you. If you are a good candidate, we will create an individualized set of eye exercises based on your eye care needs. We may also include corrective lenses, patches, and prisms as part of your therapy.

The Concept Behind Vision Therapy

Our experienced eye doctor explains that vision therapy aims to improve the working relationship between your brain and eyes. It takes advantage of your neuroplasticity abilities, enabling the brain to adapt to external stimuli. It also uses a multi-sensory approach to improving your eye alignment, focusing, and tracking skills.

During this non-surgical treatment program, we will ask you to carry out a set of eye activities for a certain period of time. As you perform the activities, your brain and eyes will become trained to coordinate with each other. This method works similarly to physical therapy for your muscles.

Conditions Treated by Vision Therapy

Studies reveal vision therapy to be effective in correcting binocular eyesight problems, like lazy eyes (amblyopia). This treatment is also helpful in correcting eye alignment errors and ocular movement disorders. It is gaining popularity as a vision rehabilitative program as well for people with brain injuries or developmental issues.
If you have any further questions about vision therapy, fill out our form or send us a message to schedule a visit. We serve Park Slope, Brooklyn, and other nearby areas in New York.
