4 Telltale Signs Your Child May Have Vision Problems

Book Appointment

Being able to see clearly is crucial to early child development and education. Because many children are unable to identify vision errors in themselves, it falls on the parents to be vigilant about these issues. If your child is exhibiting any of the four signs below, Park Slope Eye recommends bringing them in for a comprehensive eye exam:

1. Easily Irritated

According to our expert pediatric eye doctor, a short attention span may indicate that your child has an underlying vision problem. This symptom is often apparent whenever they use their eyes for an extended period. The undue pressure on their eyes may cause headaches or eye strain, resulting in their irritable mood.

2. Frequently Loses Their Place When Reading

It is normal for young children to use their fingers as their guide while reading a book, but if your child regularly has trouble following text, this could indicate a vision error. Most schools require preschool and school-aged children to undergo regular eye screenings to assess their eye movements and tracking skills.

3. Dislikes Reading or Other Close-Range Activities

This may indicate that your child has difficulties seeing things up-close, which is a hallmark sign of farsightedness. If your child wants to avoid far-range activities, this could point to nearsightedness. We may prescribe wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses.

4. Often Tilts Their Head to the Side

If your child frequently tilts their head, this could indicate astigmatism. We can diagnose astigmatism during an eye exam. The condition is typically corrected by wearing toric lenses.
