3 Ways to Protect Your Eyes From Sports-Related Injuries

The American Academy of Ophthalmology conducts a yearly survey called The Eye Injury Snapshot, which has revealed that at least 40% of reported eye injuries are sports-related. In celebration of Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month this April, your trusted eye doctor from Park Slope Eye shares three tips to protect your eyes from sports-induced trauma:

1. Have Eye Exams Regularly

Athletes and individuals with active lifestyles are encouraged to undergo eye exams regularly. This way, we can provide precautionary measures to protect your eyes from injuries. We can also check for signs of vision errors and render treatment so you can enjoy superior optics while you play.

2. Always Wear Protective Eyewear

Research shows that around 90% of sports-related eye injuries could have been prevented by wearing proper sports eyewear. During your eye exam, we’ll ask what type of sports or physical activities you partake in. The type of activity or sports you participate in will determine the type of optical device we may recommend as part of your eye care plan.

Most sports have a governing body that establishes requirements pertaining to protective eye gear. Our sports eyewear is made of high-quality materials that offer premium impact resistance for your enhanced protection.

3. Know the Signs of an Eye Injury

Some eye injuries may only become apparent after a few days have passed, like a black eye. This is why it’s best to have a good background on common signs of eye injuries. Eye pain, swelling, and sudden onset of blurred vision are some telltale signs of eye injuries. You may also notice torn eyelids or blood clots on the white part of your eyes. Differently sized pupils are a common manifestation in more severe cases. Consult your trusted family eye care clinic immediately when you develop any of these symptoms.
